That Gaze

I want that gaze*
There was once an infant
Her daddy adored her
He watched her for hours
His absolutely precious one
His princess
His cowgirl
His redheaded treasure
His brave tomboy

*Yes, I want that gaze*
The baby grew
("There IS a man that is not afraid.")
Constant companions; he adored her
Taught her funny things
About bugs, gods, the devil
Drew cartoons, sculpted clay
Taught the abacus, Mayan hieroglyphs
People-watching, pony-riding
How to properly burp

*I want that gaze*
Little girl got bigger
No longer fit in his lap
If she tried, ancient longings stirred
Father had been brother, had been lover
Had been One
Confusion lead to separation
Unconditional love became concern
He watched her grow wild with curiosity
He did not know how to tell her who they were
("You think you don't have baggage?
Then how easily do you cry?
The less you have, the closer you
  are to your heart.")

He still adored, from afar, with fear and longing
He became afraid to meet her eye
She had been a disappointment, somehow
He knew she was different
He could not tell her how to live in this world
He could not remember from whence they'd come
He only knew he still adored her
He felt he had failed her, somehow
The gaze clouded

She sought that gaze in others
*I want that gaze*
Enchantress, flirt, redheaded white witch
She found lots of attention
Mingled with sexual addiction
One day someone paid her
A star was born
("It's a great arrangement.  I need money
They need sex.  It's a very clean exchange.")

A man came who had the look she sought
He saw her as he had in other, ancient times
But he didn't understand who they were
Lover had been sister, had been slave
Had been One Communication failed Patterns took hold
He watched his bright, happy flower fade
Under the iron disdain of his disrespect

*I want that gaze*
She looks for it still
Hopeful, fearful, seeking
Process of elimination
Into each lover's eyes
Sometimes just a glance
Sometimes a deep, abiding look
"Are you he? Where has he gone?"
Each look, a moment in time for communion

*I want that gaze*
She gives it to herself
("There is only one of us here,
  nobody leaves, parting is illusion.")
Clarity sometimes, awareness of the dance
Other times just deep, dark aloneness
But in the dark the gaze cannot be seen
So she fills her days with light and beauty
And waits

*I want that gaze*
